The Bean Trees

Dear Rdeaders,

For the past few weeks I have been reading The Bean Trees, even though I have not been reading it for very long I think that it is very captivating and always leaves me wanting more. Barbara Kingsolver's writing style is also vary nice in the way that it is witty and intelligent. She also has a wonderful vocabulary to describe things in great detail. There is one thing in The Bean Trees that I am not particularly liking, I don't see a very interesting plot unraveling in the book. Usually by almost half way there becomes an identifiable plot, but while I have read I have not seen one. I am slightly disappointed but believe that I will be seeing the plot soon.

I think that this book is very unique from other books because it has a unique setting, characters, etc. But I think that I would compare The Bean Trees  to Wicked, I think that they are alike because of the narration. In both of these amazing books the narration switches from person to person. I personally like books that do this because I find it very interesting to see the story through a different set of eyes. I like to have more then one point of view shown to me. I like this format as a writer as well because it lets me experience different writing styles for different personalities.

The literary element that most interests me in this book is characters. I like being there in the book while characters are being built, placed, and sometimes changed. The impact a character in a story is immense and if there are no characters in a story then the story is not a story. Have you ever read a story with no characters in it? Of course not, because characters bring theme, plot, and life to a story. Characters in The Bean Trees are very important, just as in any other story, but the characters in this book are very unique. for instance Taylor is a young women from Kentucky that drove all the way to Arizona in a VW beetle  with no windows. You don't see Taylor's character very often because she is very unique and amazing.

At this point in time my idea for the project is a movie. A movie sounds interesting and would challenge my technology and acting skills. I think it would be fun as well and open up my understanding of the story even more. I think it would open up my understanding because at this point I am only reading the book and getting one perspective. If I did a movie I would be seeing the book from the other side and BE the book.

Love, Amaya!
